Проект Dechen & The Jewel Ensemble начался в 2010 году с альбома The Jewel. Зачем вам, Дечен, исполнительнице мантр, прославившейся коллаборацией с Тиной Тернер, понадобился этот новый эксперимент?
Дечен Шак–Дагсай: Пение мантр — медитативное и очень тихое искусство. Это не музыка в собственном смысле слова, а практика, имеющая духовное и целительное измерения. Пение мантр трансформирует чувства, разум, и моя миссия — нести в мир эту благотворную энергию. Десять лет назад мне понадобился новый инструмент, своего рода транспорт, который доставит священные мантры людям, которые о буддизме вообще ничего не слыхали, а о целительном пении думают, что это занятие для маргиналов. Мне нужен был общий язык со светским миром — и это, конечно, музыка, популярная музыка, которую приятно слушать. Вот я и поступила как хорошая мать, спрятала лекарство в конфете.
Хельге ван Дейк: Меня порекомендовали Дечен как разностороннего продюсера. С мантрами прежде дела не имел. Мы с Дечен встретились, я и говорю: «Покажите ваши песни». А у нее их нет, только эти бесконечно повторяемые слоги и слова на санскрите. Дечен в ответ: «Вот вы песни и напишете». Был ошарашен, ведь я аранжировщик и звукорежиссер, а не композитор. Но согласился.
Дечен Шак–Дагсай: Хельге тонкий, сведущий, чуткий музыкант. Ему понравились мои идеи и голос, мы вошли в резонанс, иначе ничего бы не получилось.
Хельге ван Дейк: Основу первого альбома сделали за 10 дней. По одной песне в день. Я сидел за фортепиано, Дечен напевала, подыскивал ритмы, гармонии. Запись заняла еще 6 месяцев. Барабанщиком стал мой отец, я пригласил ситариста, флейтиста, других великолепных музыкантов… Под конец записи Дечен сказала: «Нужно добавить фортепиано». — «Где мы возьмем пианиста?» — «Зачем? Вот вы и сыграете». А я никогда прежде не играл на записи, только для себя.
Дальше — больше. После записи альбома начались концерты, в том числе такие пышные, как выступление в Карнеги–холле по приглашению Филиппа Гласса. Как вы себя чувствовали на сцене?
Хельге ван Дейк: На первом маленьком концерте с Дечен у меня так тряслись руки, что приходилось прижимать локти к роялю, чтобы нажимать клавиши. В Карнеги–холле тоже было страшно. Мы с отцом стояли за кулисами, я паниковал: на сцене Филипп Гласс, потом Лу Рид, как мы, новички, записавшие всего один альбом, после них посмеем выйти? А папа мне сказал: «Хельге, пойди поиграй прекрасную музыку, это единственное, о чем тебе стоит думать прямо сейчас». И я успокоился. У меня до сих пор перед концертами мандраж, но думаю только о том, как поймать магию момента.
Biography
Dechen is a Swiss/Tibetan artist who has lived most of her life in Switzerland. Although Switzerland was to become her new home, she never forgot her roots. She is the eldest daughter of Dagsay Rinpoche, a Tibetan Lama who gave her the transmission of the precious Mantras that she is singing all over the world. Dechen is married to Dr. Kalsang Shak, a Tibetan doctor and is a mother of two daughters. Before her musical path started to grow, she has been working for almost 20 years in the Marketing Department of an international company and also teaching Tai Chi Chuan for many years. She lives in a small village overlooking the lake of Zurich.
THE BEGINNING OF HER MUSICAL CAREER
1989 she released her first single CD called ‘Bodhichitta’ and caught the attention of several music producers.
In 1994 Ryuichi Sakamoto asked Dechen to sing for the soundtrack of Bernardo Bertolucci’s famous movie Little Buddha.
It was soon after her first Debut Album Dewa Che came out, that she decided to quit her job and fully dedicate her time for her music. Produced by Polyglobe Music in Austria, the album Dewa Che with the soothing tranquil Tibetan Mantras that she sang was a great success. It has spread around the globe and was subsequently honored with Switzerland’s Gold Record and the ‘Best Spiritual Album’ in the U.S.
MILESTONES / HIGHLIGHTS
Nine more albums were to follow as well as many international concert activities in Europe, U.S.A., and Asia. Performing for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in the Olympic Stadium in Munich in 2003 as well as for His Holiness the 17th Karmapa in Berlin in June 2014 on the occasion of his first historic visit to Europe are surely among the highlights of her career.
The documentary ‘Daheim in zwei Welten’ (At home in two worlds), produced in 2006 by Swiss National Television SF, made her known to a broad public in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
A very special musical cooperation started in 2009 with the project BEYOND, with Tina Turner and Regula Curti on which Dechen represents the Buddhist voice on a spiritual album promoting peace and understanding between the various religious faiths. The BEYOND records went gold and platinum. In October 2014 Dechen, Regula Curti and Helge van Dyk have received the ‘International TARA AWARD’ by Ven. Mae Chee Sansanee from the Sathira Dhammasathan Center in Bangkok in Thailand. This award was given to them for their album JEWEL and BEYOND in recognition for creating peace through music in this world.
COLLABORATION WITH HELGE VAN DYK – PRODUCER AND COMPOSER
In 2010 she started to collaborate with Swiss producer Helge van Dyk and brought out her album JEWEL, Joyful Heart through Precious Tibetan Mantras. 2012 JEWEL brought Dechen and her ensemble to Hong Kong, South Korea, India and as a special highlight she was invited by Philip Glass to perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
MUSIC FOR THE CHINESE FRIENDS
In 2014 ASIAN JEWEL was released featuring two great Chinese musicians, Master TAM PO SHEK from Hong Kong and Mrs. Shao Lin from Shanghai. In addition to the CD, this album includes a DVD with interviews, Chinese subtitles and a live-concert. Whilst in the West Dechen’s music has already become a part of modern lifestyle used for Yoga, Tai Chi, Wellness and Therapeutic Healing Centers, she wishes to bring her music to Asia, especially to China.
THE FIRST BOOK
The German publishing house Ullstein/Allegria brought out Dechen`s first book Mantras in August 2014. This book describes her experiences during the last 25 years since she started to sing the Tibetan Mantras and the positive effects they have had on the audiences where ever she went.
THE LATEST ALBUM ‘DAY TOMORROW’
The album is called ‘DAY TOMORROW’ and stands for the sustainability of our planet. The title contains the message that with our mindful actions TODAY we are creating the base for a good TOMORROW. This is the first time that Dechen is singing not only in Tibetan but also beautiful passages in French in order to become more accessible for many listeners. The live concerts are showing a very diverse Dechen with not only soft meditative mantras but also very groovy dynamic songs that make you want to dance.

On the CD production of ‘DAY TOMORROW’ you will find great names like Leland Sklar on the bass guitar, Martin Tillman on the E-Cello, Rani Kriya on the Guembri, Satnam Ramgotra on the percussion and Mark Wilkinson as drummer. When performing live Dechen is accompanied by six great Swiss musicians such as her producer Helge van Dyk at the piano and sounds, Hank Shizzoe at the guitar, Tosho Yakkatokuo at drums and percussion, Daniel Pezzotti at the Cello, Thommy Jordi at the bass guitar and Thomas Niggli at the sitar.
WORKSHOPS
TAI CHI CHUAN
Dechen has been teaching Tai Chi Chuan for many years. She discovered the ancient art of balancing mind and body through Tai Chi more than twenty years ago. She has great respect for the Chinese culture that has a great history. She is very happy to see that the modern Chinese are more and more developing a great admiration and respect for the beautiful Tibetan culture.
Her classes are in Richterswil every Monday evening where she teaches the shortform of Yang Style, Chen Style, Sword and Fan.
MANTRA CHANTING
Dechen also gives workshops with MANTRA CHANTING where she explains the mantras like the Om Mani Peme Hum or the TARA mantra before singing them together with the group. People love to hear all the valuable explanation for each mantra as it helps them to open their hearts and to practice the mantra with a lot of devotion and faith.
TIBETAN JEWEL DANCE
She also teaches the ‘TIBETAN JEWEL DANCE’ which she developed especially for her music with the Dancing steps that are commonly danced in the Tibetan Circle Dance. In all cultures, singing and dancing are the best way to express Joy and Happiness. The TIBETAN JEWEL DANCE is a way to express the joy of overcoming the inner obstacles and to attain inner peace and happiness.
SOCIAL PROJECTS
Following the footsteps of her late mother Yischi Tsdedön la, Dechen and her two sisters Dolkar Dagsay and Dega Faoro have been active in engaging in social projects in Tibet. Together they have been looking after the Tsedön medical clinic that their parents initiated in 1999 and helped the clinic to become self sustainable. Thanks to the success of her musical career and the BEYOND Project, Dechen has been able to found the DEWA CHE Foundation that is focusing on preserving and promoting the Tibetan culture inside and outside of Tibet. www.dewache-foundation.com.

Dechen Shak-Dagsay is a contemporary singer of traditional Tibetan Buddhist mantras in new modern melodies for younger generation. She is the daughter of the Dagsay Tulku. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal [1] in 1959, [2] [3] Dechen and her family moved to Switzerland in 1963, where she has resided ever since. [4]
Strongly committed to «preserving Tibetan culture in the West,» Dechen studied and performed traditional Tibetan music and dance throughout her childhood and adolescence. However, she considers herself to be truly a product of Eastern and Western culture. As an adult, she pursued a successful career as a marketing assistant to a marketing executive in Zurich. [4]
In 2001, Dechen recorded and released Dewa Che: The Universal Healing Power of Tibetan Mantras. Although the album was intended as a singular creative side-project, its success far surpassed the artist’s expectations. In 2002, Dechen was signed to PolyglobeMusic Austria and signed an additional contract with the US-based label New Earth Records in 2004, thus affording her music access to North American markets.
In 2005, Dechen left her job to pursue her career in music full-time. 2006 saw the release of Shi De: A Call For World Peace. The artist describes the album as «A collection of powerful Tibetan peace songs that calls on all people to participate in the healing of the world.»

In May 2006, Dechen was accompanied by Swiss National Television on a trip to Tibet to follow up her social projects, including a central clinic and orphanage schools. In 2010 she visited Tibet to launch a new tailoring school where many young poor uneducated people can learn the tailoring skill to earn their living in their villages. They are sewing local traditional clothes for grown-ups and children, school uniforms, monastery decoration pieces and local summer tents. Besides the existing central clinic has a new room for midwifery. In 2012, she wishes to introduce in the clinic a new important section for child nutrition care. This introduction of child nutrition care is very important for the healthy development of children under 15 years.
In June 2009, she released an album with American singer Tina Turner and Regula Curti, called Beyond. In 2010, her new CD Jewel was released under the label Universal Music.
In 2010, Dechen Shak started a tailoring school giving chance to those youths from poor family incomers for learning to start their own business for a moderate living. The sewing machines SINGER is bought in Chengdu and a well-experienced tailoring teacher is hired to give teaching for 14 youths for three months. During these three months, they learn to make local dresses, monastery decos, school uniforms, festival tents etc.
In 2011, the Swiss Bernina Sewing machine company sponsored another 12 new Bernina machines. These 5 machines are shipped to Chokri-Tehor and the rest are sent to Tailoring School TCV in Dharamasala, India through the kind guidance of Dalai Lama’s sister Jetsun Pema-la. All the machines have reached Dharamshala and Swiss Bernina Delhi Branch is giving now the required know-how training at Dharamsala.
In 2011, Dechen also managed to start this time another snowballing rolling effect project for the talented young Tibetan youths in the field of the mechanical profession. From the selection of 5 motivated young talented Tibetan youths from the Chokri-Tehor regions now got the chance of one year’s intensive cars, trucks, tractors and motor-bikes repair training in renowned Chengdu Machine Technological Institute. Their one year’s total expenses are sponsored by Dechen’s Dewache Stiftung. As in their agreement contract, after finishing the training successfully they are obliged on their own initiative to train in future further interested young poor Tibetans on the concept of «Snowball Rolling Effect».
In 2012, Dechen could again send 15 new Bernina Sewing machines again to Dharamsala, and this time to TCV Tailoring Department where the graduated ones start earning through tailoring.
At the beginning of 2013, after a successful Buddhist Mantra Concert in South Korea, Dechen was contacted by one of the audiences who wished to help the Tibetan school in Dharamsala with new computers. So Dechen contacted Exile Tibetan Educational Minister in Dharamsala and asked if she could send those 150 new computers from South Korea to TCV High School students. This computer donation is already in process between Dharamsala and S. Korea.
The same year, Dechen also sponsored 10 youngsters in the Tibetan Kham region in learning the typical traditional Tibetan restaurant cooking style. These graduates can work in big restaurants, hotels or can start their own restaurant business. She built a centrally situated «Central Mechanical Workshop» in Tehor Chokri region and thus those 5 graduated mechanical college students could work there. Besides, 28 youngsters from poor regional families get 2 years of mechanical repair training course under the expert of a highly qualified Chinese Instructor. The most important goal in opening this mechanical workshop center is to further able to give basic mechanical training for other interested youngsters from poor families in this wide region. This Central Mechanical Workshop Center serves the surrounding 14 villages and the Sechuan-Tibet Highway traffic which passes through this town.
In 2013–14, Dechen is recording 2 parallel modern contemporary CDs with contents touching environment, culture, spiritual and love text songs. This time also Dechen will be working with Tina Turner on 1 CD and in the other CD working with other prominent international musicians.
In 2014, after the successful launching of «ASIAN JEWEL» translated Traditional Chinese version for China and Taiwan, «DAY TOMORROW» album will be released after 3 years’ preparation in texting and recording on 7 March 2015 worldwide. The main themes in this unique upbeat Pop Album carries an important message for global issues. These are sustainable global sustainable environmental care; better human relationships through sustainable interfaith and inter-culture respect and tolerance and to sensitise people on inhuman treatment of commercial animals.
